OND with jlms qkw includes:  stories from Iraq and Afghanistan; news from around the world - multi-sourced;  links to a cartoon or two; news from Utah; sports headlines; and anything else I feel like.  I have a soft spot for Iowa.

Tonight's edition may be lacking - I am under someone's weather.  And my cat has tried to sit on my keyboard all frickin' day.

Happy Kos-iversary to Me + Pooties

Wed Aug 13, 2008 at 05:33:43 PM PDT

I missed my own Kos-iversary!  It was 8-11!  And I cannot find my first comment, although i recall it was in a rescued diary.  This is diary #55.

No Infighting - Play Nice!

I have written a few original diaries on the Crandall Canyon Mine Disaster.  I happily visit many  community diaries like Bookflurries:  Bookchat, the Saturday morning stuff, and anything with a pootie.  I guest host when asked, including Fitness Monday, WAYWO, Mojo Friday, WAYR, and SNLC.  My fantasy is to guest host Cheers & Jeers, and Brothers & Sisters.

Celebrate, reminiscence, and share pooties with me!

Tonight I focused on repression - my first several stories brought that out, so I continued the theme.  There is no end to the evil that people do, and it will take all of us to fight the good fight.  The courage of this Jewish Holocaust survivor is remarkable - he continues to travel regularly to Austria to remind them of truth and justice.

Coal Kills: Anniversary 2:48AM

Wed Aug 06, 2008 at 02:20:33 AM PDT

August 6, 2:48AM MDT:  University of Utah seismologists reported a "mining induced" earthquake.  140 miles away, at the Crandall Canyon Mine, retreat mining caused 69 acres to collapse, under the weight of 1500' of sandstone.

Bob Murray, of Murray Energy Corporation, became the face of the disaster.  And the Liar-In-Chief.

Reports are in:  from the Senate Committee, House of Representatives Committee, Mine Safety (hah) and Health Administration, and Labor Department.

Memorials are going up, one later today, and one on September 14, 2008.

In memory of those who died, in honor of those who survived, and to hold those who are guilty accountable, please join me to explore what happened and what we still do not know.

Any Other Lonely Utahns?

Tue Aug 05, 2008 at 02:34:51 PM PDT

Hi all!  I'm jlms qkw, living in Sugarhouse in Salt Lake City, Utah.

I'm pretty sure I was the only Utahn at Netroots Nation and would love to be proven wrong.

I'm interesting in meeting other Utahns and perhaps organizing a bit.  Looking at what we can do together.

One of the things we could do:  a Crandall Canyon Anniversary Blogathon.

I gathered a few folks in my last diary, and hope to find more.

Saturday Night Loser's Club, Vol. CXVII: Killer Pizza from Mars Edition

Sat Aug 02, 2008 at 04:38:45 PM PDT

Five gold stars for the loser-est story of the night!  Meanwhile, chingchongchinaman (3cman) has left the care and feeding of this series to me!

Also please share summer travels, bizarre restaurants, or toys!

My husband is a travel addict and we frequently travel as a family also.  Sometimes even on a per-diem.  We have eaten at some lovely restaurants in Santa Fe, Austin, Oceanside, and Anaheim.

Please join me for a tour of one of the restaurants we enjoyed during our 8 weeks of summer travel from hell.

Happy Pioneer Day!

Thu Jul 24, 2008 at 11:18:06 AM PDT

Some Utah news, when even Obama is including Utah in the 50-state strategy.

One hundred sixty one years ago today, the members of the LDS church first entered the Salt Lake Valley.  Today, it is the biggest, most widely celebrated holiday in the state.

Since I, like 30% of my state, am not LDS, I have never been very excited about celebrating this day.  However, it's my baptism birthday and when my kids were little, I told them the parade and fireworks were for me.  ;-)

More Utah news, including an item about Rocky Anderson, to follow:

Saturday Night Loser's Club, Vol. CXIII: Silly Pics Edition

Sat Jul 05, 2008 at 07:32:59 PM PDT

Hi all!
I haven't seen a peep from 3cman nor any substitute.

So I just thought I'd see who was having a loserly Saturday Night.

I'm sure I'm not alone.  Heck, I know I'm not alone, because my whole family is crabby and trying to get ready for a trip in the morning.

OND: Halfway Edition

Mon Jun 30, 2008 at 09:00:48 PM PDT

Welcome to Monday Overnight News with jlms qkw.  My goal is to find stories you may not have seen elsewhere.  I am also committed to stories on Iraq, Afghanistan, Utah, and the Iowa Floods.  Additionally, I have sections on Political Cartoons and Sports. Halfway?  We're halfway through the calendar year, and Sunday evening wrapped up halfway through the baseball season.

Leading Story:

The Australian (Sidney):  China moves to defuse racial tension before Olympics  Or, don't be surprised.

With authorities eager to present China as a harmonious nation during the August Games, the government has ordered local officials to defuse petition campaigns by discontented citizens and to prevent "mass incidents," such as riots and demonstrations, according to the news reports.

Saturday's stability meeting is the latest of a flurry of security measures that China is taking to prevent any domestic unrest upsetting the Games and was targeted at petition campaigns by farmers and other disgruntled citizens.
